Civil War Era Staff & Field Officer Sword with Cast Grip, Sculpted Guard and Attractive Scabbard Fittings

Measuring 37 inches overall, with a 31 inch curved double fuller blade bearing an etched "U.S." on the left side, an American Eagle on the right, the Clauberg "knight" trademark on the left ricasso and "3" on the spine. The hilt follows the overall pattern of the Staff & Field with the addition of fine sculpting of the decoration, with a bear's head on the rear quillion, fine floral designs on the guard, oak leaves and acorns on the pommel, and a silver finished brass grip with brass wire wrapping. The iron scabbard is lightly floral engraved on the tip, with the mid band showing a finely sculpted array of arms, and the upper band showing an elaborate scene of an American Eagle set in a cloud with sunbeams radiating above and lighting streaking below, and a recurring number "3" on the fittings to match the blade.

ConditionVery good. The otherwise fine blade shows a mixed dark gray patina with patches of brown and scattered spotting and handling marks. The acid etching is clear and legible. A dent is present in the guard near the "US", with the left arm of the "U" cracked, showing traces of the original gilt and silver hilt finish and the remainder well aged brass. A mixed brown is present on the body of the sheath, with a few dings.
