Description:

The so called Model 1795 was not a specific model and had an array of variations but was the first weapon mass produced for the U.S. military and the first produced at an American national armory. This example is a "Type I" and was manufactured between 1799 and 1804. The lock has "SPRINGFIELD" on the tail, the eagle motif over "US" at center, a curled toe on the frizzen, and slight curl on the top of the cock. The barrel has a bayonet stud, deeply stamped star and a "U" on top at the breech, and "P/eagle head/V" proofs on the left at the breech. There is a "star" shaped condemnation mark stamped deeply into the barrel. The front barrel band has an integral blade front sight, and the middle band and front of the trigger guard have sling swivels. The stock has "RI" carved into the left flat, "T P L" carved into the left side of the butt, and "MARYLAND" on the underside of the forend ahead of the lock off to the right. The buttplate tang has some additional faint markings. A correct early style bayonet is included.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The musket and bayonet have a dark brown patina and some oxidation and mild pitting. The stock is very good with some sanding and re-oiling on the forend which also has chips and slivers absent from the edges. The lock has a wooden block in the frizzen spring and is currently not functional.
