Description:

This carbine was manufactured in the transitional range (2400-3600) and has brass furniture and Model 1862 markings but the Model 1864 pull latch and has a vent on top of the breechblock. The switch from the Model 1862 style to the Model 1864 was due to the propensity for the simpler latch design to be bumped or blown open in combat. Naturally, this did not win the Joslyn carbines much favor with the cavalrymen who primarily used them. The stock has an anchor marking ahead of the trigger guard suggesting use by the U.S. Navy as well as a pair of "FDL" cartouches and an "FDL" stamp. The Navy is also known to have ordered the earlier Joslyn Model 1855 in limited numbers.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has an even, dark gray patina. The lock and breech components have a mottled gray patina. The brass components have an aged patina. The stock is very good as lightly sanded and refinished and has mostly clear markings. The metal markings are crisp, and the lock functions fine.
