Description:

This small horn may have been used as a priming flask on a British ship, floral designs, and "Gerrit Newkirk" on the body. The plug is flush fitted and secured by brass studs. The throat is turned down, darkened, and has a raised ring. A modern leather strap is fitted to the throat and the antique staple on the plug. Several men by the name of Gerrit Nerkirk lived in colonial America particularly in the late 17th century and first half of the 18th century. Priming horns were generally used with the earlier forms of firearms such as matchlocks but are not believed to have been widely used in the 18th century for flintlocks. Modern tests suggest using finer powder in the pan makes little difference with a reliable lock and properly vented barrel.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall.
