Description:

Dated 1913 on the slide with a series of Birmingham proofs on a number of components. Patridge blade front and windage adjustable rear sights, with the three-line military nomenclature on the left side of the slide behind the "winged bullet" logo, matching numbers on the frame and grip safety and an assortment of military proofs. The pistol is equipped with a smooth trigger, lanyard swivel and checkered hard rubber grips. Typically seen without a manual safety device, this example has been upgraded with a two position switch on the left side of the hammer. When engaged, the safety butts against the rear of the slide, physically blocking the hammer from falling. Inscribed on top of the slide is "CAPt W.G. PEARSON/4th Bn THE KINGS OWN/(R L) REGt.". Records are limited, but do show a Captain W. Gareniares Pearson, a resident of Barrow among the officers of the 4th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Further records indicate that Pearson was injured while leading a charge during the Battle of the Somme and was subsequently captured after the 4th Battalion pulled back to the start line, though his precise fate is currently unknown.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 75% plus of the original blue finish, showing a few areas of brown patina, light handling marks and some light edge wear. Mild pressure dents and a chip on left grip panel are visible on the otherwise crisply checkered grips. The hammer safety is in need of adjustment, otherwise mechanically fine. A historic example of a Webley semi-automatic service pistol with interesting inscription.
