Under 13,000 of these pistols were manufactured by Ames Manufacturing for Peter H. Finnegan and the Chicago Fire Arms Company in the 1890s. This example has floral engraving in a band on the barrel and around the edge of the action. The action is marked "THE PROTECTOR/PAT. MCH.6.83.AUG.29.93." in a circle, and the removable side plate is marked "CHICAGO FIRE ARMS CO./ CHICAGO, ILL." The matching serial number is marked on the plate, cartridge block, and inside of the action. It is fitted with a checkered hard rubber plunger pad and panels.

Fine. The action is currently not functional and needs some small replacement parts. 90% of the frosted original nickel plating remains. There are some very small flakes on the plunger and plunger arms that have a dark brown patina. The hard rubber panels and plunger are very good and have moderate wear, and there is a small hairline crack in the right panel. The markings and designs are crisp.
