Description:

This is a very rare example of a JP Sauer and Sohns Model 36 prototype pocket pistol that incorporated the "new and improved" magazine safety and lead to the eventual Model 38H. This was the very first pistol manufactured after the patent for the magazine safety was approved, and it is the pistol pictured in "JP Sauer & Sohn" by Cate and Gijn on pages 256-257 and on pages, 202,207, 212 and 213 and actually on page 307 of the book "J.P. Sauer & Sohns Vol II" by Cate and Krause. This specific pistol falls into the noted serial number range for all the Sauer prototype pistol. As discussed in the text, pistol serial number 21007 does not have the noted word "PATENT" on the slide, and it is theorized that it had the final or last version of the "slide retainer block". Where this example has the new slide marking with the work "PATENT" on it. The slide is marked on the left side with the early single line markings of: J.P. SAUER& SOHN.SUHL." followed by "Cal. 7,65." to the lower rear side. The right side is marked with the single word "PATENT" over the serial number "210008". The right rear side of the frame is also stamped with the matching serial number "210008". The aforementioned full serial number is stamped internally on most of the movable parts visible when left grip panel is removed. There is a single "Crown/N" proofmark on the frame behind the serial number and again on the front right side of the barrel. It has a beautiful high polish blue finish with beautiful checkered European walnut grips. It comes with one original early magazine with the round base plate that is marked with the intertwined "SS" logo on the front end of the base plate and the rear marked "CAL. 7,65.".

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original blue finish overall with slide retraction wear. The checkered walnut grips are also in excellent condition with nice, sharp, distinct checkering on both side with only very minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A rare and historic WWII J.P. Sauer & Sohns prototype pistol.
