Stock: walnut

Description:

Single brass bead on solid rib marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." The top sliding plate is marked "A E. WHITMORE'S / PATENTS / AUG. 8. 1871 / APRIL. 16. 1872". This particular shotgun features Damascus barrels, 2 3/4 inch chambers, and an extractor. The casehardened hammers, break lever, action, trigger guard and side plates feature extensive floral scroll engraving with detailed game scenes on the side plates with a pointer and a rabbit on the right with two game birds in the rear corner, and a dog and four birds on the left. Both scenes have grassy pastoral backgrounds. The trigger guard features a raccoon in a field scene. Mounted on a fancy checkered splinter forearm and round knob pistol grip stock with fancy tear drop flats, extra fine checkering at the top of the wrist, horn forend tip insert, and a checkered hard rubber buttplate. This style of grip was a special order item as the factory default configuration would be a straight English style grip. Remington offered five standard grades of varying embellishment but would as a special order produce a gun directly to the individual customers specifications. The style and coverage of the engraving along with the grip does seem to indicate this as being a special order shotgun and not a standard production model. Stock measurements are: drop at comb 2 inches; drop at heel 3 inches; 0 cast; 0 toe; 14 inch length of pull.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially refinished (barrels) with 75% of the blue. Displaying areas of high point and edge wear, areas of thinning blue with a yellow/brown patina, general handling marks, and light surface scratches. The action has aged to a smooth, mostly silver patina with some spotting, general handling marks and clear detailed engraving. The wood is fine with small indentations, handling marks in the checkering, loose forend tip, and some light chips on the buttplate. Mechanically very good.
