Barrel: 24 1/2 inch octagon
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1259
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 135
Class: Antique
Description:

Both of these rifles are marked "J. MANTON-LONDON" on the top of the barrels. The locks, breech plugs, patch boxes, and buttplates are engraved with Indian scrollwork designs, and the patch box doors have different tiger scenes. They have no British proofs and are equipped with small cone front sights, notch rear sights with folding leaves (with peep holes) and Hindi markings, and multi-point checkered straight grip stocks. Iron ramrods are fitted beneath the barrels, and the middle ramrod pipes and bottom of the stocks have sling eyes. There are German silver forend caps (engraved), wedge escutcheons, initial ovals, and thumb plates. The pair comes in a hardwood case with a cruciform multi-tool, conical bullet molds, and powder flasks. Interestingly, the molds with this pair are for small conical bullets which would be less accurate than a tightly patched round ball from a smoothbore. Smoothbore "rifles", built with rifles sights and used with proper loads, are known to be nearly as accurate as rifles at short ranges.

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished overall. The barrel displays 90% plus dark plum brown finish and has a few small spots of pitting. The lock and patch box have mercury like case colors and minor handling and storage marks. The buttplate and trigger guard retain strong fire blue finish. The stock is very good and has crisp checkering and a slight chip between the lock and breech. The gun has some overall minor handling and storage marks. The lock functions excellently, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp.
