Description:

'Type I' National Match rifle. The rifle is a late production U.S. Springfield M1 rifle with selected and hand fitted components. Correctly, the only specially marked part is the barrel which is hand stamped "N M *" on the left side between the front sight and the rear gas cylinder band. The asterisk indicates that this rifle was assembled in 1958 with more selective barrel tolerances. The right side of the barrel behind the operating rod is marked: "SA F6535448 2 56…" The barrel is stamped with several "P" proofs, punch marks and the Defense Acceptance Stamp (DAS). The stock has the last four digits of the rifle serial number 4420" written in the barrel channel with a white marker. The trigger housing group is not marked with the rifle serial number. All components are late production, Springfield Armory, pieces. All components have the gray-green Springfield Armory parkerized finish. The barrel chamber is correctly bright. The stock and handguard are both oil finished walnut. The "DOD" final inspection mark is located on the left side of the stock and the encircled, block "P" proof mark is stamped on the underside of the wrist. The rifle appears to conform to the specifications for a 1958 production Type I NM rifle.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, totally original with 98% plus of the original parkerized finish with light operating rod retraction marks and some scattered light storage marks. The stock is also excellent with some light storage dings on right side of buttstock and pistol grip. Mechanically excellent.
