The No. 54 was manufactured between 1897 and 1916 and was specifically designed for precision target shooting. This example is built on a 44-1/2" action and is equipped with a 16 3/8 inch long Stevens scope instead of the more common globe and Vernier peep sights. The barrel is marked with the two line Stevens A & T Co. address and parent marking on the upper right flat, "32.40" on the upper left flat, and 10782 on the bottom. There is no rear sight seat or provision for a front sight. The rear of the multi-point checkered forearm has "C" over the matching partial serial number "782". Note that the checkering pattern goes around the palm rest indicating the rifle was ordered with the rest. The front of the action is marked "54" and "0." The action has scrollwork with punch dot backgrounds, border designs, and bear and stag scenes. The lower tang is marked with the matching full serial number. It is equipped with double set triggers and the special finger lever with spur and walnut panels. The massive Swiss style buttstock has scalloped checkering on the wrist, attractive figure, a Swiss schuetzen buttplate marked with the matching serial number, and a large cheekpiece.

Very fine as partially refinished with 95% plus of the refurbished blue finish remains on the barrel. There is some slight fading towards the muzzle and some cycling wear. 90% plus of the rich original case colors remain with fading limited primarily to the lever and upper tang. The palm rest base retains 95% plus of the original nickel plating, and the scope retains 85% plus of the original blue finish. The engraving is very sharp and crisp. There are some very small marks and scratches from handling and storage scattered throughout. The wood is also very fine and has crisp checkering, a few minor marks, a smooth oiled finish, and a couple small chips at the edges of the cheekpiece. The action and set triggers function excellently, and the scope somewhat cloudy, but usable, optics. The markings are crisp throughout. This special order Stevens Model 54 was considered the top-of-the line in target rifles.
