Description:

Stevens manufactured variations of these tip-up rifles from the 1870s to the mid-1890s both with and without forearms. This pre-1886 example has a combination blade and globe front sight, rear sight filler block, the Stevens & Co. address and patent marking on the upper left barrel flat, the matching serial number on various components, a tang mounted peep sight, and a smooth forearm, and a smooth, straight wrist stock with a Swiss style target buttplate. The wood has some nice figure and a dark oil finish. The action and breech end of the barrel have floral scroll engraving. The right side of the action also has a scene with a stag, and the left has a wolf. The underside of the barrel is stamped "J J GRANT." Both sides of the rifle are pictured in "Single Shot Rifles" (1947) by James J. Grant on pages 74-75. Grant lists the rifle as "Special Engraved."

Rating Definition:

Fine as professionally refinished. 98% plus of the blue finish on the barrel. 20% of the original nickel plating remains, primarily on the buttplate and trigger guard. The wood is very good and has a few light scratches and marks. The forearm is has a repaired sliver on the left side at the front, and there is a slight, 1/2 inch crack on the left side of the wrist at the junction with the frame. The action functions excellently, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp.
