Coming from the personal collection of Max K. Hurlbut "The Vagabond Policeman", this unique Python features the four major styles of Colt engraving. With smooth grips marked with "R. Henshaw 1831/L. Nimschke 1850-1900/C. Helfricht 1871-1921/Contemporary" on the left and fitted with silver Rampant Colt "Colt/150" medallions. Hurlbut himself states that the engraving was performed by Colt Master Engraver George Spring. The revolver displays American scroll and punch dot engraving of slightly different styles used throughout Colt's long history. Nimschke stars and delicate scroll on the sides of the frame and cylinder respectively, light feathery on the trigger guard and back of the frame, the bold sweeping scroll and punch dot textures of Helfricht on the larger areas of the frame and contemporary scroll on the barrel. To add to the already extensive engraving, the left side plate has been engraved with the Kodiak Alaska Police Department logo, and "MAX K. HURLBUT/CHIEF OF POLICE/KODIAK, ALASKA" on the left side of the barrel. Fitted with a ramp blade front and fully adjustable rear notch sights. The butt has been factory fitted with a lanyard loop and swivel. The accompanying documentation provides a wealth of information about this piece, it includes a Colt factory letter, a hand written letter from famed Colt historian R.L. Wilson noting this as being the only one of its kind, letter from Hurlbut himself attesting that not only did he order this weapon but that was his daily carry service revolver during his time with the Kodiak police, Whittier Alaska Marshal's office, and the Tombstone Arizona Marshals office, correspondence from Hurlbut to Colt, sales receipts, the original box end label, and much more. The revolver also includes a copy of the Hurlbut autobiography "The Vagabond Policeman", two Kodiak police patches, a Tombstone Marshal's Department patch, and a speed loader.

Very fine. The revolver shows general handling and usage marks, befitting the duty weapon of a law enforcement officer in the wilds of Alaska. The engravings are crisp and highly detailed. The face of the cylinder shows darkening, and there is a slight drag line on the side of the cylinder. The grips display general handling marks and some loss of the black in the lettering. Mechanically excellent.
