Description:

This small bore fowling piece has a basic post front sight and is signed "Por Manuel Grebino" on the top of the barrel in gold and has "Construida de Herraduras" (constructed from horseshoes) inlaid offset to the left, as well as inlaid floral, bird, and martial motifs. Similar "horseshoe" markings have been found on several antique Spanish muzzle loaders. The lock has an engraved scene with a dog, gold inlay, and "Grebino". The various fittings are also engraved and accented by gold inlay including the small cap box which has an eagle and stand of arms. The stock has checkering at the wrist and forend, sling swivels, a semi-pistol grip style wrist with carved scrollwork at the tail, and an attractive, sweeping cheekpiece followed by floral carving on the left. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Most of the fittings are polished bright and retain half of the engraving gold fill. The barrel has 70% of the brown finish and retains nearly all of the inlay. The otherwise fine stock has been repaired at the edge of the forend, has a crack above the lock, and is chipped by the tip of the ramrod. The raised relief carving and checkering is very sharp, and there are some minor marks and scratches throughout. The engraved patch box retains 80% nitre blue on border. The forward barrel wedge is loose. It is mechanically fine and has mostly crisp markings and designs.
