Description:

6,686 Model 1862 carbines with full length barrel covers were manufactured by Sharps & Hankins in Philadelphia in 1862-1865 under contract with the U.S. Ordnance Department for the U.S. Navy. Very few of them are found today with significant portions of their leather barrel covers remaining making this carbine absolutely outstanding. The leather cover on the barrel is secured by screws at the breech and was designed to protect the barrel from corrosive saltwater. It has a band at the muzzle, blade front sight, adjustable rear sight, and standard Sharps & Hankins markings including matching serial numbers. It has a small brass collection tag marked "121."

Rating Definition:

Very good. The full length leather cover nearly all remains aside from some surface flaking and tears where it covers the front of the frame. The visible iron surfaces have a silver gray patina and some slight pitting. The brass has aged patina. The revarnished stock is fine with and mild scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent.
