Description:

Manufactured in 1905. This rifle has a rare, special order, straight grain walnut pistol grip stock with no checkering. The stock has a black, hard rubber grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and a crescent steel buttplate. The rifle has a 26-inch, full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a rare Marbles Duplex front sight which features a fine gold bead on a fixed blade and folding colored bead on a hinged post and a flat top, sporting style rear sight with screw adjustable center piece. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt. The hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate are casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock have a varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight and on the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number is stamped behind the tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall. The barrel and magazine retain nearly all of the blue finish. There is some minor finish loss on the barrel band and forearm cap. The receiver has moderate handling wear. The blue on the bottom of and upper edges of the receiver has faded to a plum patina, and the sides of the receiver have some light scratches and handling marks. Most of the blue finish remains on the bolt. The niter blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a silver-gray. The upper receiver tang shows handling wear and has aged to a blue-brown patina. The case colors on the hammer and sides of the lever are faded but about 85%. The contact points on the bottom of the lever have faded to a silver patina. The crescent buttplate has a smooth silver patina. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with a protective coat of varnish. The stock and forearm have a few minor handling marks. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting rifle with scarce, special order, un-checkered, straight grain, pistol grip stock and special front and rear sights.
