Manufactured in 1875 as a first model featuring the desirable checkered oval "thumbprint" dust cover held in place with grooved guides. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a round barrel and plain trigger when received in the warehouse on September 1, 1875, and shipped on October 1. The barrel is fitted with dovetailed blade and elevation adjustable rear sights and is marked with the two-line address/patent dates. The rifle correctly lacks caliber markings. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873," and the early production four digit serial number is stamped in script on the lower tang. The crescent buttplate has a compartment (cleaning rod not included).

Rating Definition:

Very good, having a smooth gray patina mixed with some minor pitting. A protective coat of varnish has been applied to the barrel and magazine tube. The refinished wood is good with some scattered dings and dents. Mechanically excellent.
