Manufactured in 1882. The 21 inch barrel (short rifles commonly had 22 inch barrels) has dovetailed blade and elevation adjustable sights and the two-line-address/patent dates marking and "CAL. 45-60" on the top flat. "MODEL 1876" is stamped on the upper tang, and "45-60" is marked on the cartridge elevator. The nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock with grip cap are checkered, and the buttstock has a replacement hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 310 S." The stock inlet is unmarked.

Fair. The refinished shortened barrel retains patches of blue finish with the balance as smooth brown patina. The receiver retains generous traces of silvered out case colors in the protected areas and has a couple patches of minor pitting. Both side plates show file marks and some blended refinish. The wood is good with some minor dings and scratches throughout, some worn forearm checkering, and recut checkering on the refinished buttstock. Mechanically fine.
