Description:

Measuring 14 inches overall, with a 9 inch single edged drop point blade, which is installed in a 5/16ths inch thick rectangular cross-section ricasso and tang, with inlaid silver accent bands and star designs, with some of the bands showing a subtle zig-zag edge pattern. The hilt is carved horn, with enamel in-fill accents, "33" lightly cut into the right side, and a silver collar. The collar includes a steel hinge pin, and the entire blade assembly swivels about 130 degrees to reveal an extra-thick 2 3/4 inch long spike or awl. When the spike is out, the handle encloses the lower section of the knife blade to protect the fingers during use. The original maker and user of this knife are unrecorded, though the thick squared-off ricasso puts one in the mind of a South American field knife like the "facon" of gaucho fame.

Rating Definition:

Good. The steel shows mild pitting, with some light edge nicks, polishing, and a mixed patina. The silver is quite solid in the cuts, with a mixed aged patina. Some enamel is lost from the hilt, which a few small age cracks and scuffs. Overall a very interesting knife, both attractive to the eye and mechanically novel.
