Description:

First appearing in the directory in 1850, James E. Evans remained in the gun business until 1872, and was also listed as a "tackle" dealer in 1865. German silver blade front and notch rear sights, with scroll engraving present on the tang and plug, and "J. E. EVANS PHILADA" on top of the barrel, which has a gray streaked brown finish, emulating the signature Deringer pattern. Matching scrollwork is present on the side of the hammer, lock, accent plate, reverse plate, and trigger guard, with the top of the hammer decorated as a fish, zig-zag border engraving on the buttplate, dual zig-zag and straight borders on the initial shield, and the starburst decorated finial, which also serves as the escutcheon for the barrel retainer screw on the underside. Fancy varnished walnut grip, with Schnabel tip forearm and a bird's head butt.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Half of the original brown striping remains on the barrel, with mild spotting concentrated on the right side of the barrel, bright gray wear along the high edges, and a light gray patina forming on the sides. Flash pitting is visible around the nipple, original case colors remain visible on the hammer around the screw and on the frame under and around the hammer, with a smooth gray patina on the lock and solid traces of the original pattern on the tang and plug. Grip is fine as freshened, with a chip absent from the right side of the tip, smaller chips from around the metal, and some mild pressure dents and varnish loss overall. A mixed patina is visible on the silver, darkest in the protected areas, with minor handling marks.
