Description:

Produced by the Schlotterbeck brothers following Henry Deringer's 1863 lawsuit against A.J. Plate, which started over confusion as to whether or not Deringer had given Charles Schlotterbeck approval to use his name. After the decision, the brothers brought one John Deringer, a tailor with absolutely zero gun sales or production experience, in as a partner, and promptly began producing 100% legal "J. Deringer" pistols, such as this example in the ultra-compact "peanut" configuration, measuring in at only 4 3/4 inches in total length. Brass blade front and notch rear sights, with the distinctive "J. DERINGER/ PHILADELA" address on top of the breech, a pair of arched zig-zag lines on the left side, and "WART/ STEEL" on the upper right side of the barrel. The J. Deringer address is repeated on the lock plate which is decorated with finely executed scrollwork. The scrollwork is also shown on the hammer side, accent and reverse plates, the front half of the tang, shield escutcheon and the trigger guard. There is a floral blossom pattern on the escutcheons, with burst patterns on the bolster, tang screw and rear half of the tang. There are zig-zags on the reverse plate screw and around the border of the buttplate, and a pineapple finial. Both the guard and the shield have an unengraved stripe running from upper right to lower left.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel has an artificial light gray patina ahead of the breech, a darker brown/gray on the breech, tang and lock, and traces of refinished blue on the replacement hammer. The stock is fair, with cracking at the tip, light sanding, and some mild dings and dents. Mechanically fine.
