Description:

Manufactured by the iconic Holland & Holland of England, this consecutively serialized pair of Royal Ejector double rifles were manufactured circa the 1920s. The receiver and side locks exhibit full coverage floral scroll engraving. The scrollwork extends to the forearm hardware, break lever, trigger guard, and grip cap. Each lock is signed "HOLLAND & HOLLAND," and the break lever and receiver underside are marked "ROYAL/EJECTOR." The locks have gold inlaid cocking indicators. The grip cap has a compartment containing an extra front sight. It has a matted raised ramp mounted hooded blade front sight with flip up moon and a three leaf rear sight graduated from 50-500 yards mounted on a matted raised quarter rib. The wide concave rib has the caliber marking (".275 MAGNUM"), and the factory address marking extends on both barrels towards the breech. Matching serial numbers are found on the lower tang, "crown/V" proofed water table, forearm hardware, and both nitro proofed barrels. The barrel flats are marked "275 2.50" and "CORDITE 44-160 MAX." The action has double triggers (one textured, one smooth) and automatic tang safety with "SAFE" in gold. The nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point checkering, blank initial oval, inlaid contrasting wood star (right side of buttstock), cheekpiece, and solid recoil pad. Weight: 9 lbs 8.2 oz. The leather bound oak case features Holland & Holland labels (leather maker label, paper notice label, and paper quality assurance label serialized to both guns) on the interior of the lid and contains a two-piece cleaning rod with three attachments, two oilers, two pairs of snap caps, small wooden container, and two used test targets. The exterior of the case lid is inscribed "NAWABZADA S.Z.A. KHAN/OF RAMPUR." Rampur was a princely state of British India founded by Nawab Faizullah Khan in 1774. Nawabzada means the son of a Nawab or the son of a princely state ruler. It is highly likely the case inscription references Sayyid Zulfikar Ali Khan Bahadur (1933-1992) whose father, Raza Ali Khan, was the Nawab of Rampur from 1930 to 1966. Sayyid became the titular Nawab of Rampur following the death of his elder brother in 1982. Note that gun "B" is inscribed to the Nawab, presumably Raza Ali Khan.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as factory refurbished. The barrels show streaks of blue finish with the balance a smooth plum-brown patina. 95% plus case colors remain on the action. The wood shows limited handling evidence and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing a number of minor-moderate handling/storage marks. The labels are nearly complete.

B) Holland & Holland Royal Ejector Double Barrel Rifle

Manufacturer: Holland & Holland Ltd
Model: Royal Ejector
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 275 Magnum
Barrel: 25 inch solid rib
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 4390
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 62
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

Consecutively numbered to "A." As compared to "A," the engraved patterns are slightly different, the break lever is unmarked, lacks an extra sight, the three leaf rear sight is graduated from 100-300 yards, the caliber marking on the rib reads ".275 MAGNUM RIM CARTRIDGE," the barrels lack a serial number, the barrel flats are inscribed "FROM HH/THE MAHARAJAH OF/BIKANER/TO/THE/NAWAB OF/RAMPUR," nitro proofs and cartridge information is stamped ahead of the barrel flats (".275/CORDITE 47-160 MAXm), the buttstock lacks an inlaid star, and weight is 9 lbs 9.2 oz. As established in "A," the Nawab of Rampur likely references Raza Ali Khan, a progressive ruler who acceded to the Dominion of India in 1947. After India gained its independence from the UK, Raza Ali Khan devoted himself to charitable projects. Based on the manufacture date and Raza Ali Khan's rise to power in 1930, Sir Ganga Singh is a possible contender for the title His Highness Maharaja who presented these rifles to the Nawab.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally refurbished. The barrels retain nearly all of the blue finish and the action retains nearly 98% of the case colors. The wood shows limited handling evidence and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
