Description:

Colt Model 1873 Cavalry Revolver manufactured in 1878 that was inspected by Ordnance Inspector Capt. John E. Greer and Sub-Inspector Henry Nettleton. Henry Nettleton's distinctive "HN" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the underside of the frame, trigger guard, top of the back strap, left side of the hammer, the side of the cylinder, and on the left heel of the grips. A "P" proof mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel and the side of the cylinder. The full serial number is located on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The partial serial number of ''8276'' is on the underside of the barrel below the ejector housing, and a partial number ''8130'' is on the side of the cylinder. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the address: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." The address does not have the broken "T" in "PT.", but it does have the double line under the "O" in "Co" that has been noted in the markings on some revolvers in this serial number range. The left side of the frame has the Colt ''three-date in three-line'' patent marking followed by the "US" property mark. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "6115". The revolver has the second pattern ejector housing with a bulls-eye ejector rod head. It is fitted with a one-piece walnut grip that is stamped with the date "1878" above the script initials "JEG" in an oval. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the sub-inspector's script initials "HN" in an oval, and as noted, there is a small ''HN'' inspection mark on the underside of the heel. It has the blued components and a casehardened frame. The accompanying factory letter dated January 14, 1964, verifies the serial number and 45 caliber. The barrel length, finish, and stocks are "Not Listed", and it was shipped as 1 of 100 to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on July 12, 1878.

Rating Definition:

Good with most of an old period refinished dipped blue finish on all the blued parts. The case colors have faded on the frame, hammer, and loading gate, as they were cleaned some time ago, and now have taken on a old golden hue overall. The grip is in fine condition overall with nice clear cartouches. The markings on the barrel and frame appear to be a little washed out from the refinish. It has matching numbers on all the parts except for the cylinder which is still an ''HN'' inspected part in the same serial range. Still a representative example of a scarce Henry Nettleton SAA revolver. Formerly of the Will Hoffeld Collection.
