This example of a Colt Single Action Army "Flattop Target" revolver was manufactured in 1891 and subsequently custom embellished overall. These were the premium grade large frame target revolvers produced in the late 1890s, and only approximately 925 of this model were actually produced. This example is very rare in that is it chambered in the very scarce .455 Eley caliber; only 37 were actually manufactured in this caliber. The factory letter confirms the caliber and barrel length and indicates it was originally blue finished. It was part of a six gun shipment sent to Colt's London Agency on January 22, 1891. It was subsequently engraved with roughly 75% coverage traditional floral scroll engraving backed by punch dot backgrounds. The revolver has a distinctive frame with flat top frame strap fitted with a notch rear sight (adjustable for windage). The barrel has a pinned front sight and the factory address and "455 ELEY" markings in panels surrounded by rich scroll engraving. The underside of the barrel just ahead of the cylinder pin is marked with English proofs. The left side of the receiver bears Colt's three-line, three-date patent markings. The cylinder is stamped with alternating British proofmarks in the flutes. The serial number is located on the bottom of the frame, forward portion of the trigger guard, and the bottom of the back strap. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "32," and the rear of the frame on the right side is stamped "L."

Very good as custom embellished and replated with aged patina forming on the silver plating and minor marks and scratches. The grips are fine and have natural age cracks and variances in tone and moderate handling type wear. Mechanically excellent.
