Description:

The accompanying factory letter states this revolver was delivered to the U.S. government inspector at Colt as part of a lot of 150 guns on August 2, 1878. This revolver was probably converted to Artillery configuration by Colt circa 1895-1896 and retains all of the original serial numbered components. The full serial number is on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9172" is on the barrel and cylinder. The "HN" mark for Ordnance Sub-Inspector Nettleton is on the frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap. The barrel has the "W" mark for Ordnance Sub-Inspector E.C. Wheeler who inspected revolvers in the 49000 serial range during Nettleton's absence. "P" proof marks are stamped on the barrel and cylinder. The frame has the Colt three-date/three-line patent mark followed by "U.S." The barrel has the Colt "Style 3" address. The ejector rod has the early bullseye head. The hammer has civilian style knurling on the spur and may be a replacement installed when the revolver was altered by Colt c. 1895. The grip lacks inspection marks.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver has been professionally restored and retains 95% of the blue and casehardened finish. Traces of pitting are visible beneath the blue on the barrel, and there is light pitting on the muzzle crown. The cylinder, trigger guard and back strap show light to moderate handling wear. 95% of the vivid case colors remain. The replacement grip is near mint. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a fine looking, professionally restored, desirable Henry Nettleton sub-inspected SAA altered to Artillery configuration by Colt.
