This revolver is a prototype J-frame double action revolver that was kept by the Colt factory. The included Colt factory letter confirms the serial number (circa 1970), the caliber, barrel length, heavy weight barrel, finish, short and wide hammer spur, plastic embossed adhesive strip marked "J PROTO" on butt and the checkered varnished walnut service grips with "COLT" branded on each panel at top in customary position for medallions. The revolver features a blade front sight on an unmarked barrel and the Rampant Colt stamped on the left side of the frame. The serial number (7400) is marked on the crane over "1".

Very good, retaining 75% original blue finish with a strong cylinder drag line, a smooth gray patina on the grip straps, some streaks of gray (test marks) on the barrel and some light spotting (mostly on the left side of the frame), along with some minor oxidation (mostly under the grips). Hammer has some filling marks. The grips are excellent with some scattered minor dings and scratches, along with a few minor dings in the overall crisp checkering.
