The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was finished on December 8, 1913, for a Mr. Taylor. Blacked chopperlump barrels engraved with a band of foliage at each breech, respectively signed "HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET, LONDON." and "WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS, LONDON." on the tubes, and each struck on the underside with Sir Joseph Whitworth's fluid steel trademark. Concave rib fitted with a matted raised ramp mounted bead front sight with flip up moon sight. Matted raised quarter rib with rear sight of one fixed and two folding leaves graduated from "100" to "300" yards and each with platinum inlaid center line. Casehardened treble grip action with removable striker discs, engraved "CHARGE 75 GRAINS CORDITE .500/.465 CASE 3 1/4 INCHES", blued top lever engraved "ROYAL EJECTOR" and manual safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Casehardened locks each with gold inlaid cocking indicator and signed "HOLLAND & HOLLAND". Casehardened trigger plate with double triggers, the front trigger checkered and articulated. Blued trigger guard and casehardened pistol grip cap with hinged trap cover, the trap containing a spare bead front sight element and two spare strikers. Well-figured 14 3/4 inch pistol grip stock including 3/4 inch ventilated rubber recoil pad. The stock with raised cheekpiece, checkered grip and checkered forearm. The forearm with Rigby type lever release. The underside of the butt with gold oval escutcheon engraved with the name of a later owner. Two blued iron sling mounts and best quality "Royal" scroll engraving throughout. Weight: 11 lbs. 7 oz., London nitro proof marks for 75 grs Cordite and 480 grs bullet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. The barrels shows and old factory refurbished blue thinning down the length, markings softened, small dent to right edge of quarter rib. Action and locks retaining strong traces of original casehardened finish, with refinished trigger guard, engraving clear throughout. Slight traces of original bluing to top lever. Stock refinished and revarnished, some chips to edges of forearm, numerous marks and bruises overall. Mechanically sound. A true 105 year old icon that was used but cherished and well cared for. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
