Description:

This collectors piece was manufactured in Italy around 1990 and has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind work of art by Master Engraver Gino Cargnel. The barrels are factory quality blued and have a stepped ventilated rib with front sight and center bead. The receiver features splashes of fine American style scroll engraving with contrasting punch dot backgrounds with four Buffalo Bill themed scenes with heavy gold overlay reminiscent of the sculptural work of Frederic Remington. The gold inlaid scenes depict a Pony Express rider on the right, a scout on horseback on the underside, and a bull rider on the left per the magazine article discussed below. The trigger guard features a bust of famous Western showman William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The individual scenes and Cody bust are rendered in lustrous semi-relief gold inlay. The scout on horseback scene on the underside of the receiver is signed "G. CARGNEL." The forend hardware is also engraved. It is stocked with exhibition grade AAA fancy English walnut Monte Carlo stock with finely detailed checkering, fancy scroll carved borders, contrasting rosewood grip cap, blank gold initial shield, and solid recoil pad. The "MX Special" designates a P4 trigger (adjustable trigger blade with four positions front to back) for variable lengths of pull setting. It has standard markings and proofs on the barrel sides and flats, 2 3/4 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, and improved modified (2 circles) and improved cylinder (4 circles) marked chokes. This wonderful work of art was featured in the July-August 2017 issue of "Clay Shooting USA Magazine" titled ''The Buffalo Bill Gun," a gun collector's dream. There are nine full and close up color photos, an in depth description and a brief history of the gun. A copy of the magazine will be included with the purchase of this gun. The article states "Cargnel became one of the most sought after engravers by noteworthy clientele, including the likes of Griffin & Howe, Browning (of Superposed fame), Perazzi, and America's Master Gunsmith Frank Pachmayr who commissioned him to do engraving work on several of his guns including what Pachmayr called his Special 21 Winchester and The Parker Invincible (Parkers's flagship model with only three known to exist). In addition, Gino Cargnel has completed work for famous actors (including Tom Selleck), entertainers, politicians (President Ronald Reagan), and business entrepreneurs. Not surprisingly, his engraving and inlay work has been on display at several U.S. (Cody) museums." Cargnel has also been featured in numerous magazine articles including an in depth article titled “Firearms Artistry: Elegance in Steel” by Kevin Steele. The barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .739/.739 inch; minimum wall thickness .030/.030 inch; drop at comb 1 1/4 inches; drop at heel 1 7/8 inches; length of pull 14 3/8 inches with trigger at front setting.

Rating Definition:

Very fine and attractive example of Master Engraver Gino Cargnel's incredible craftsmanship with factory quality blue finish showing light fading, bright receiver, sharp scroll engraving, some loss of definition on the trigger guard inlay, crisp engraving on the other gold inlays, and mild marks. The wood is very good and has crisp checkering, a minor professional repair on the left side of the stock executed by the original stock maker, faint hairline slit on the rear of the forend and to the rear of the trigger guard, crisp carving, and very attractive figure. Mechanically excellent. This is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind work of art by famous Master Engraver Gino Cargnel.
