Description:

Manufactured pre-WWII with "JOS. OFENSTEIN ASCHAFFENBURG" inlaid in a banner on the textured top rib, bead style blade front sight, folding leaf rear sight, folding tang peep sight, cocking indicators, dual triggers (single set right), right side safety with "D.R.G.M./72621." marking, checkered stock and forearm, horn grip extension, and buttplate with trap over compartments for a shot shell and two rifle cartridges. Other than the barrels, it has nearly full coverage traditional German engraving including game scenes of stag, deer, and rabbits. Includes copies of letters about hunting and German combination guns from famed outdoor writer Jack O'Connor from late 1940s and early 1950s. In the letters, O'Connor notes discusses what ammunition to use and where to find it for German combination guns. He also discusses good guns and calibers for deer hunting, including blasphemously recommending sporterizing Springfield 1903s and 1917 Enfields. He notes that the 16 gauge barrels from Germany can use American 2 9/16 inch 16 gauge shells with light charges. The smoothbore barrel gauges at a tight full choke at the muzzle and 2 9/16 inch chamber. The barrels have a shared extractor. Length of pull is 13 1/8 inches.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 20% original blue fading to smooth gray-brown patina, mild scratches and dings, aged patina on the inlaid bands and maker's mark on the barrel, smooth gray on most of the action and remaining components with dark contrasting backgrounds, and crisp overall engraving and markings. The wood is fair to fine with partially smoothed checkering, some nicks and small chips at the edges, chip on the right rear of the horn extension, and general scrapes and dings. Everything appears to be mechanically fine.
