Description:

Franz Bartusch was active in Vienna around the 1840s-1860s and is known to have produced a percussion over/under combination gun for Leupold II and likely supplied arms to other European nobles as well. The locks are marked "BARTUSCH" (right) and "IN WIEN" (left), and the barrel rib has "1" preceded by "F: BARTUSCH IN WIEN" in gold inlay. There are also golden bands and accents at the breech, golden accents on the bestial hammers, and golden borders around a gold crown over a "CL" monogram on the upper tang. The monogram has not been identified but is likely that of one of many dukes or princes in the countries that made up the former Holy Roman Empire. The engraving primarily consists of a variety of scenes featuring European game animals and dogs accented bordered by traditional Austrian "black leaf" scroll patterns and some floral accents. The engraving extends to the buttplate, including the trapdoor. It is equipped with a blade and notch sights, and the rifle barrel is fired with a single set trigger. The forearm and buttstock have fine checkering, and the butt has a shadow-line cheekpiece on the left and a sling swivel. The trigger guard has a horn extension. The right barrel is rifled and gauges at roughly .620 caliber, and the smoothbore left barrel gauges at 16 gauge.

Rating Definition:

Fine with essentially all of the gold inlay remaining, patches of original blue mixed with brown patina and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrels and rib, gray and brown patina on the balance, some patches of mild oxidation/pitting, and crisp markings and engraving patterns. The wood is very good and has crisp checkering, some minor dents and pressure marks, and light scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive Austrian hunting gun that certainly would have been worthy of a high-born client.
