Description:

This musket was manufactured at the Virginia Manufactory in Richmond for the State of Virginia to arm their militia in 1812 during the transition from the Model 1797/First Model muskets to the Model 1812/Second Model muskets in 1812. The lock has is 6 inches long, marked "VIRGINIA/Manufactory" at center, "RICHMOND/1812" at the tail, and "F/AD" on the inside, and it has a teat, double throat cock, and integral iron pan. A washer has been added under the rear lock screw. The band springs are to the rear of all of the barrel bands which is correct for this period. The trigger guard has pointed finials. "5" and occasionally some other small numbers are stamped on most of the various components. Most of these muskets had 42 inch barrels, but some had 39 inch barrels or 36 inch barrels like this one. This is believed to have been to utilize burst barrels and wood not suitable for stocking longer muskets. "1 V.A." is stamped ahead of the buttplate tang. The vast majority of the Virginia Manufactory muskets were converted to percussion for use by the State of Virginia and the Confederacy during the Civil War making flintlock examples particularly rare and desirable.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a mostly smooth blend of gray and brown patina on the iron, generally distinct markings, chips of various sizes along the refinished stock, mild scratches and dings, and slivers absent along the forend. Mechanically excellent. This is a solid example of a very rare Virginia Manufactory musket likely used during multiple conflicts including the War of 1812.
