Description:

Similar presentation grade muskets and rifles are known from the Mexican-American War era and the lead up to the Civil War. Some were presented for acts of heroism or as prizes for marksmanship. It appears to have been made by Nicholas Concklin of New York around the 1840 given the barrel is inscribed "N Concklin" surrounded by "sunburst" engraving. It has a bayonet stud on top at the muzzle. There is coordinating scroll engraving on the barrel, tang, lower barrel band, side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate tang. The upper barrel band has a low profile blade front sight. The lock has "IP MOOR/WARRANTED" at the center and bird engraving at the tail. A spread wing bald eagle holding a blank inscription panel is on the right side of the butt, and a blank thumb plate is above the checkering on the wrist. Includes an early style socket bayonet without a locking wring.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period converted to percussion with moderate flash pitting concentrated around the bolster, mostly light gray patina on the balance, some replacement screws, light aging on the eagle and banner, crack in the latter, proud trigger guard tang, crisp checkering, some chipping around the lock and lower barrel band, and general scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
