Description:

This is a desirable Remington Single Shot Split Breech-Loading Carbine that was manufactured under U.S. Ordnance Department contract in April 1865. The carbine has the "Type I" features which include 20-inch round barrel chambered for the .46 rimfire cartridge, short 7 1/2-inch forearm and small receiver. The carbine has a steel dovetail mounted front sight blade and two-leaf folding rear sight. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The barrel and sights have a military blue finish and the barrel band, receiver, trigger guard and buttplate have a casehardened finish. The breech block and trigger have a dark oil-quenched finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain American walnut. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "REMINGTON's. ILION, N.Y./PAT. DEC. 23. 1863, MAY 3 & NOV. 16. 1864". A block "P" and two script initial Ordnance inspection marks with rectangular borders are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. Ordnance single and multiple initials sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. Total production of the Remington Type I Split Breech Carbine was 5,000 carbines. Remington repurchased 3,000 of these carbine from the Ordnance Department following the Civil War and re-sold them to France. Ordnance inspected Type I Carbines are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel and front and rear sights retain nearly 85% of the original military blue finish. The upper barrel band, receiver, trigger guard and buttplate retain 90% plus of the mottled gray casehardened finish. Wear is limited to a little silvering on the edges and contact points of the receiver and trigger guard. The breechblock, hammer and trigger have 90% of the black oil-quenched finish with some very minor wear on contact points. The stock and forearm are both in very fine overall condition with legible Ordnance inspection marks. Wear is limited to several shallow dents on the left side of the forearm and stock. U.S. contract Remington Split Breech carbines are difficult to find in this exceptionally fine condition.
