Description:

The accompanying factory letter (photocopy) lists this revolver with an 8 inch barrel, nickel finish, and smooth walnut grips when shipped on February 6, 1873, to M.W. Robinson, New York City. S&W historian Roy Jinks comments that R. Robinson supplied the current grips and engraving to fill a special order. The revolver features a deeply cut scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The head of a mythical creature appears amongst the scrollwork on both sides of the frame. The engraving is equivalent to factory "B" coverage with about 70% coverage. Matching assembly number "475" is found on the grip frame, cylinder, barrel, and barrel latch.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period New York retailer embellished. 70% of the nickel finish remains on the barrel and frame, otherwise a balance between smooth and mottled gray patinas mixed with some minor pitting. There is a sharp ding on the rear edge of the cylinder. The engraving has been enhanced in a few of the highly exposed areas. The grips are excellent showing a few hairline age cracks and attractive color and grain pattern. Mechanically excellent.
