Description:

Smith & Wesson manufactured 20,000 No. 3 Russian 1st Models for the Russian government in their own serial number range (1-20000) and they are virtually non-existent in U.S. collections today. This revolver has the added rarity of being one of only three known (serial numbers 211, 383, and 438) of the first issue of approximately 500 revolvers that are fully serial numbered as well as assembly numbered. This example is the earliest production and lowest serial number known to exist, it was in the first shipment to Russia and is by far the finest condition of the three extant. Note that no. 438 is also in this auction. The barrel rib has the S&W Cyrillic marking followed by the double headed Russian eagle and inspector initials "KO" for Captain Kasavery Ordinetz. The right grip panel is numbered to the gun. The cylinder has the serial number "211" and the assembly number "302." "302" is repeated on the grip frame, barrel and barrel latch. For more information see www.russianrevolvers.com. Provenance: Joe Leiper Collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 80% original blue finish on the frame and barrel and strong original blue in the cylinder flutes with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. There is some minor-moderate pitting on the barrel towards the muzzle. Visible original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your opportunity to obtain the finest known 1st Issue Russian military contract S&W No. 3 Russian 1st Model revolver. Truly a gun for the most serious student of 19th century S&W’s and a one-of-a-kind addition to any collection!
