Description:

According to the included letter from the Springfield Research Service, this rifle was verified by serial number as a U.S. 1903 National Match Rifle. While final disposition of the rifle was not documented, it was noted as in use at Fort Benning, Georgia (home of the Army Infantry School) in 1931 as part of an investigation into breech gauge use and function (relevant photocopied records included). The rifle was reported by the inspectors as gauging at .303 at the breech, and producing a mean radius of 2.45 inches at an unspecified range during testing. The "star" air gauge stamp is present on the muzzle of the "SA/1-29" barrel, with "2H" and "2377" marked beneath the handguard, a blade front sight and ladder rear sight properly without the 2,800 yard 'volley' notch, and an unmarked sheet metal muzzle protector. The receiver bears standard markings, with the "NS" bolt marked "5" on the underside of the handle and fitted with a short firing pin and reversed safety lever. Fitted with a (renumbered to match on belly) smooth pistol grip stock, stamped "F" on the tip, "P" behind the trigger guard, "S/O" in the magazine catch area and "D.A.L." on the left side, with a pair of reinforcing bolts, a brown leather sling, and a coarse checkered buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 90% of the arsenal refurbished dark parkerized finish, showing some mild wear on the barrel from the sight protector, mild edge wear and handling marks, and some spotting on the bolt. The reoiled replacement stock (see above) is fine, with some pressure dents and a small spot of white paint on the right side, and the sling shows some cracking and verdigris. Mechanically excellent.
