Heinrich Scherping started his business in Hannover in 1857 and quickly became the gunmaker for the royal court. The business was continued by his descendants and their partners until the late 1930's. This rifle is built on a Mauser 98K action with the bolt and small parts being numbered 2019 or a partial version of that. The receiver is also lightly engraved and bears a "crown/N" proof and "???G/14.6gr" on the left side. The floor plate and trigger guard are also lightly engraved. The barrel has a lightly engraved border where it meets the receiver and is marked "BOHLER SPECIAL" on both sides with "2848" on the left and "318" on the right. The barrel rib is marked "HEINRICH SCHERPING.HANNOVER.INH.H. ECKEBRECHT. HOFBUCHSENMACHER". It is mounted in a fancy walnut pistol grip stock with a small schnabel forend with contrasting tip, raised oval foregrip areas, fine multi-point checkering on the pistol grip area, a shadow line cheekpiece, and a modern Pachmayr black rubber ventilated recoil pad. It includes the mounted D.R.G.M. Helios 5a scope and a leather sling.

Very good, retains 95% plus original blue finish and 10% casehardened with the balance being smooth bright patina. There are some scattered handling marks and a few patches of light pitting along the barrel. The stock is very good with a series of long thin cracks in the left grip area, a minor crack to the rear of the receiver, scattered light-minor handling marks overall, and crisp checkering.
