Description:

This is a very fine example of a late production Model 1893 Borchardt pistol that was manufactured by the DWM factory. These DWM pistols are highly desirable (especially to Luger collectors) and are not encountered nearly as often as the Loewe produced examples. They are also considered to be the predecessor to the DWM 1899/1900 Luger pistols, using the same toggle type action. Originally marketed under the name Waffenfabrik/Loewe/Berlin, however around 1895, that company merged with the Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik of Karlsruhe forming the new company of Deutsche Waffen-Und-Muntionsfabriken (DWM). The side of the barrel extension is marked in three lines: "SYSTEM BORCHARDT PATENT/DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND-MUNITIONSFABRIKEN./BERLIN." The top of the toggle link is stamped "D.R.P./No. 75837". The pistol serial number is visible on the underside of the pistol grip, the stock lug on the rear of the spring housing, the left side of the trigger, the left side of the toggle link, the rear underside of the barrel. Two of the correct style replacement magazines are numbered "1820" with the dummy magazine being unnumbered. The left side of the barrel has the standard "Crown" over "B", "U" and "G" proofs over the bore dimensions of "172,28". Additionally, the left front edge of the barrel extension, the left side of the breechblock and toggle assembly have the standard Crown over the "B" and "U" acceptance proofs. This pistol is complete with two replacement magazines, an original dummy (walnut) magazine with the brass oiler on the base, the original walnut shoulder stock with its original walnut cheekpiece and attaching iron, original black leather holster, a one-piece brass cleaning rod, two pin-punches, small flat steel screwdriver and screwdriver handle. All stored in a correct leather covered Borchardt pistol carrying/storage case.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish with wear on the edges and high spot and muzzle overall with some heavier thinning/blue loss and oxidation on the front grip strap. The grips are both very fine with nice original checkering on both sides, mixed with some minor/light handling marks with a couple of very minor compression areas on the sides. The shoulder stock and cheekpiece are both very fine overall with its nice original darkened varnish showing minor light handling marks and scratches on the sides in some areas. The very front exposed end of the stock where the attaching iron is installed has a set of initials, lightly scratched into the wood area. The black leather holster is in fair condition with the stitching all coming loose on the side with most of the face of the leather having flaked off, with the balance showing age cracking. The case is about good overall with the hinges and front latches complete. Half of the outer surface of the leather cover has flaked off with the balance showing age cracking also. There is a horizontal crack visible in the lid starting at the right edge to the middle of the lid. One end is completely missing the leather cover and the leather handle is missing. The green felt liner inside the case is intact. A fine high condition cased DWM Borchardt.
