Description:

The XIT Ranch was one of the largest in the world, covering approximately 3,000,000 acres in the Texas panhandle from about 1885 to the early 1900s. It was roughly 20 to 30 miles wide and about 200 miles long, stretching across ten counties along the New Mexico border. At its peak approximately 125,000-150,000 cattle were maintained. This pair of spurs are attributed to an unknown blacksmith, likely employed by the ranch, and are said to have been presented to Jack Wallingford in the 1890s, who was a cooks assistant on the ranch. They feature swinging coin mounted buttons, the lateral buttons being liberty cap quarters dated 1818 and 1819, and the medial buttons being braided hair Liberty head pennies dated 1846 and 1851. The heel bands are double mounted with copper arrows on the medial arms and Roosevelt dimes on the lateral bands which were added later, likely by Jack Wallingford. They have straight shanks, large spoked rowels, and leather straps. Provenance: Originally presented to XIT Ranch cook's assistant Jack Wallingford, gifted to Carolyn Gillis Patton's father by Jack Wallingford, gifted to Carolyn Gillis Patton by her father, Bruce Bartlett. Heel band width: 1/2" Shanks: 2 3/4" Rowel diameter: 2" Heel opening: 3 3/8".

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing mostly a smooth grey patina, age darkened copper, and mostly bright silver mountings with moderate wear consistent with use. The leather is fine with moderate wear.
