Description:

This weapon could either be considered a very large bowie knife or a modestly sized naval cutlass. It shows many of the characteristics of Confederate made weapons of the Civil War except that it does bear a few markings. The guard in marked "FJC84" on the left of the bow and there are small "R" inspection type marks on the spine of the guard and right ricasso of the blade. 21 3/4 inches long overall with a 16 1/2 inch straight drop point blade. The guard and handle appear to be two pieces, each of cast brass, the guard having a round finial on each end. The tang is half the length of the grip, which is secured with two rivets.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the blade showing mostly a mottled brown-grey patina with some bright showing through and a few minor nicks in the edge. The guard is good showing mostly an attractive antique patina with minor dings scattered throughout.
