The included Griffin & Howe research letter identifies the shotgun by serial number and states that it passed through Abercrombie & Fitch as an "Accommodation" meaning they did not sell the gun but acted as an intermediary for an out of state or out of country dealer. The letter further states the gun arrived at Abercrombie on July 29, 1970, and briefly describes it as a "Churchill double barrel in 12 gauge". The letter concludes by stating the gun was received back at A&F on December 11, 1972, as part of the estate of the original owner. Blue steel, dovetail lump barrels marked "CHURCHILL (GUNMAKERS) LTD./7, BURY STREET. St. JAMES'S LONDON, ENGLAND", matted, narrow Churchill style rib with a single bead sight, "XXV" in gold inlay at the breech end of the rib, chambers marked and measured at 2 3/4 inches, automatic ejectors, improved cylinder/improved cylinder chokes, light floral scroll engraving at the breech end of the barrels, and standard Birmingham nitro proofs on the flats. Casehardened, scalloped, self opening, box lock action with full coverage, fine floral and scroll engraving, "CHURCHILL" maker's marks on the sides, trigger plate marked "HERCULES/FINEST QUALITY/MODEL", dual triggers, engraved double-rolled trigger guard, and automatic sliding tang safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Walnut, checkered straight grip stock and splinter forearm with Anson style latch, engraved fittings, raised tear drop accents behind the flats, silver initial oval inscribed "DR. PAUL A. FERNBACH/1970/BUFFALO N.Y.", and checkered bare butt. With leather bound takedown case marked "DR. PAUL A. FERNBACH/BUFFALO, N.Y." on the lid with a Churchill interior label, two snap caps, two-piece cleaning rod, and cleaning rod heads. Barrel and stock measurements are: both bores 9 inches from the breech proved at ".729" and measured at .732/.729; chokes .005/.009; minimum wall thickness .032/.032; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/4 inches; length of pull 14 inches; weight 6 lbs. 1 oz.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 99% original blue finish on the barrels, some very small surface scratches and light handling marks. The receiver has 99% original case colors and crisp engraving. The wood is also excellent with sharp checkering, and just a few small dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Case is very good with some corner and edge wear.
