Description:

This is a prewar Finnish 20mm M39 antitank rifle. Originally these rifles were made to be mounted and fired from a combination steel bipod/sheet metal sled (also with the rifle) that was fitted to the center of the rifle. This rifle is approximately 80 inches long with a super large boxed style receiver and bolt similar in size and shaped to the U.S. M2 MG and easily weighs 70-80 lbs without the sled. They functioned as a shoulder fired, gas operated semi-automatic antitank rifle. There is a large crank handle on the right side of the action which retracts the bolt to the rear with a bolt release on the lower part of the grip. It is then fired with a single pull of the trigger that starts the cycling mechanism which uses a long piston under the barrel to drive the bolt to the rear to cycle the action. The rifle was fed from a huge box magazine that was mounted on top of the action, feeding the rounds down through the top of the receiver. The rounds would be stripped out of the magazine, by the bolt, fed into the chamber, fired, then the action would cycle and ejected the spent cartridges out of the bottom of the action. The left side of the action is stamped with the "20 Pst. Kiv./39" over the boxed SA Finnish proof next to the boxed 'VKT' mark of the Finnish state run arsenal, later know as Valmet over the serial number. It has the side mounted front and rear sights like a BREN gun that is calibrated from100-1400 meters. The rifle is complete with the combination bipod/sled, four original box magazines, carrying cans, muzzle brake, cleaning rod and handle, and rubber mounted buttplate that fits on the end of the action, along with some rounds (consignor attributed as modern-made live ammunition from Anzio Ironworks). It is all packed in an Interarmco marked shipping crate. The barrel has been deactivated by welding the breech shut and drilling a hole in the side.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall as deactivated with 90% of the original blued finish showing minor wear on the edges and high spots. The accessories are all in excellent condition and so is the original wooden shipping case. An excellent example of a rare World War II Finish M39 antitank rifle.
