Description:

Jacob Harder was a gunmaker active in Athens and Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, as well as just across the state line from Athens in Waverly, New York, and is known to have produced other combination guns similar to this one. The left barrel is smoothbore and is measures .47 caliber (around 44 bore), and the right barrel is rifled and measures .33 caliber. The barrels are signed "J. HARDER" (right) and "ATHENS PA" (left), and both barrels have their own set of blade and notch sights, scroll engraving on the breech sections, pairs of inlaid silver bands ahead of the bolsters, and single gold bands at the breech end between the nipples. The standing breech also has a broad "U" shaped gold panel and floral scroll engraving. The locks have scroll engraving but are otherwise unmarked. The locks are fired using a shared double set trigger group. The lock for the rifle barrel requires the trigger to be set first. The furniture is German silver with floral scroll engraving and includes additional accent plates, a small compartment on the bottom of the buttstock ahead of the toe plate, and a cap/patch box on the right. The stock is gracefully shaped and has a checkered wrist and an oval cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Fine with attractive aged patina and generally crisp checkering on the German silver furniture, bright gold accents, dark aged patina on the silver, mottled gray and brown patina on the locks and barrels, some minor pitting, and general mild overall wear. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, the majority of the finish, some minor edge wear, and a few minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. A truly exceptional, highly decorated mid-19th century American Longarm!
