Description:

French Model 1763 and 1766 muskets were among the most widely used muskets by the Patriots during the American Revolutionary War thanks to support from France, which ultimately allowed the Americans to emerge victorious. French muskets remained in use well-into the 19th century and were the basis for the early U.S. martial musket models. "IPSWICH" is branded into the stock to the left of the barrel tang and on the right rear ahead of the buttplate, a militia marking of Ipswich, Massachusetts. The aforementioned militia marking exhibits a similar font and style as seen on "US" surcharged French muskets from the Revolutionary War era; marked as such in an attempt to show ownership and prevent theft. This musket has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, a brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, "star/D" and "star/M" inspection marks stamped on the left quarter of the barrel at the breech, a "star/D" inspection mark above "Charleville" at the center of the lock, "IBI" inside the lock, "P(star)N" on the sideplate and faintly marked on the bottom of the butt, and a "D" stamped on the left of the butt. Includes a socket bayonet marked "S/PT". Provenance: The Jonathan Peck Collection; The Greg Lampe Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with smooth brown patina, some scattered areas of light pitting, and mostly defined markings in the iron. The period re-oiled stock is fine with scattered scratches and dents, some minor chips in the ramrod channel, a chip at the tail of the lock, a few small cracks around the buttplate, and defined brandings. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is fair with scattered mild pitting. This exceptional "IPSWICH" branded Revolutionary War era French Charleville Model 1766 musket would make a fine addition to any U.S. martial or Revolutionary War era firearms collection!
