Description:

Allain Daubresse indicates the gunmaker Cassaignard (also spelled Cassagnard on some examples) was born in 1708 and died in 1786. The pistols have fire blued, smoothbore barrels have silver blade front sights and gold burst, scroll, and floral designs. The right locks are signed "Cassaignard" in ornate script while the left locks are signed "a Nantes." The standing breeches have dished rear sights and are finished bright. The remaining furniture is silver and is decorated with case and relief chiseled patterns consisting of mainly floral and scroll motifs along with some classical martial accents and a mustachioed man on the pommel studs with gilt backgrounds. The full-length, figured walnut stocks have raised relief floral and scroll carving. The pair comes in a closely fitted case with a cleaning rod, several balls, a replacement flask, ball mold with sprue cutter, oiler, measure, combination turnscrew/wrench, and a few flints.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 90% plus period refurbished blue remaining, 75% gold, mostly bright locks and standing breech with some mild oxidation, attractive aged patina on the silver, and mostly minor age and storage related wear, including some minor dents. The stock has a crack through the forend but is otherwise also very good and has crisp carving, light scratches and dings, small cracks at the tails of the locks, and nice figure. The left lock is not locking in full or half-cock position, but the right lock is mechanically fine. The case and accessories are also very good and have mild age and storage related wear, including some mothing and fading on the lining.
