Description:

Originally manufactured as a percussion "Pocket Model of Navy Caliber" revolver, this example is an experimental, serialized predecessor to the approximately 2000 type four conversions: 4 1/2 inch octagon barrel .38 rimfire configuration c. 1873-1875. These revolvers had no ejector attached to the barrel and had their loading lever cutouts filled. Interestingly, this revolver has no visible serial numbers and was likely maintained by the factory as the sample or model gun for the conversions. The top barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" and "COLTS PATENT/No." on the cylinder along with the stagecoach holdup scene. The revolver is otherwise devoid of markings. It is fitted with a smooth walnut grip. Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish, strong patterns of the original case colors, and 30% of the original silver, with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina or attractively aged brass. The grip is very fine with some scattered light dings and retaining most of the varnish. Mechanically excellent.
