Description:

Manufactured in 1912, this Model 1892 carbine is attributed as presented to rodeo performer Joe Greer by the legendary country western musician and actor, Gene Autry (1907-1998). Autry was born in Texas before moving with his family to Oklahoma where he grew up helping his father on the family ranch. After high school, Autry moved to St. Louis and worked as a telegrapher for the railroad, where he began playing music locally. By 1928, Autry was performing on the radio and in 1929 was signed to Columbia Records. He would go on to have an incredible music career, making 640 recordings and selling more than 100 million records. Autry made his film debut in 1934 and by 1940 had already featured in 44 films, most of which were low budget westerns. With the outbreak of World War II, Autry stepped away from acting, joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and flying over "the hump" from India to China, helping to supply them in their fight against the Japanese. After the war, he continued his acting career, featuring in a total of 93 films by 1953, as well as being a regular on television. The included hand written note from Julie Greer Struble states that this carbine was gifted to her great uncle (Joe Greer) by Gene Autry in thanks for acquiring cattle for him, likely during Autry's time as a partner in the World Championship Rodeo Company. Also included is a copy of a photograph with a notation stating that it features Joe Greer, his son Harry Greer, Harry's daughter Jo Mae, and Gene Autry. The carbine itself has standard markings including Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The receiver and buttplate have a special order nickel finish. Each side of the buttstock has a large nickeled plaque attached with the large Winchester trademark filled with red enamel. It is likely this carbine was made by the factory for presentation, and may have been presented by Winchester to Autry, who then presented it to Greer. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with the above mentioned plaques and a carbine buttplate. Includes a leather carbine scabbard marked "L-FCO/1918" and "C.O.K."

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 90% plus of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina, mostly on the barrel bands, and 97% plus of the original nickel finish with some scattered light handling marks. The wood is also very fine with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The scabbard is very good with some mild wear and scattered minor handling marks. A rare opportunity to own a gun attributed to "the singing cowboy", Gene Autry!
