Description:

Manufactured 1882 as a Third Model with integral dust cover guide and dust cover with grip serrations at the rear. The top barrel flat has the two-line address and King's patent marking in front of the rear sight and the caliber marking at the breech. The caliber marking is repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The model designation is marked on the upper tang and the serial number is on the lower tang. The initials "ORF" are carved on the right side of the buttstock. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The included factory letter confirms a serial number application date of 14 March 1882, confirms the current configuration, and lists a receipt at warehouse date of 21 May 1883 and shipment date of 13 November 1883 in order number 9034. These last two dates of "1883" may be a factory or transcription error, and may be intended to be "1882".

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains 30% of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to a mix of artificially applied speckled grey and brown patinas and a light speckling of black paint in a few areas of the receiver. The reoiled wood also very good with a small patch of filler in the upper left edge of the forearm, some scattered minor handling marks, and crisp period carving on the butt (see above). Mechanically fine.
