Description:

Engraved flat beveled locks each with stepped tail, safety catch, roller and raised priming pan, each signed “W FLETCHER & SON”. William Fletcher is listed as an active gunmaker circa 1815-1870, being under the W. Fletcher & Son name post-1818. "GUN MAKERS/BARTON St. TEWKESBURY" marked on top of the brown twist finished side-by-side octagon barrels, each with deep 7-groove rifling, with Birmingham proof marks on the bottom of the breech. A substantial sprung bayonet with a blade of hollow triangular section is mounted over the rib. Standing breech and upper tang engraved. Figured walnut half length stock with checkered grip and a small blank oval initial escutcheon inset behind the tang of the standing breech. Engraved blue finished iron furniture including the trigger guard with large pineapple finial, patchbox and buttplate. Iron ramrod. One absent screw at the center of the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 85% original brown finish on the barrels with some very light flash pitting at the breech, 70% plus vivid case colors with smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, 60% original blue finish on the fittings, and sharp engraving. The stock is also very fine with a re-glued cracked section beneath the lock, a spliced and repaired section to the left of the upper tang, some light handling marks, and defined edges overall. Mechanically excellent, including the bayonet mechanism. A high quality attractive example of a rare flintlock double rifle with snap bayonet!
