This is an exceptional example of one of the approximately 2,800 scopes developed and manufactured c. 1940-1941 under contract for the U.S. Marine Corps, to be installed on M1903 and M1903A1 National Match rifles specially modified by U.S.M.C. armorers, with some known to have seen highly effective overseas combat use in the Pacific Theater. The scopes themselves were kept in inventory after World War II, seeing re-issuance in Korea and Vietnam as famously mounted on a small amount of Winchester Model 70 rifles that were used in the jungles. It is marked "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/2767" in three lines on the main body tube, the reticle ring is correctly stamped with an "8" to denote 8x magnification, it has the standard cross-hair reticle, with a rail-guided sliding aluminum front ring and a J. Unertl marked adjustable rear ring. Includes both screw on aluminum lens covers and a desirable World War II issue Micarta scope can that has an original green painted finish with a canvas strap connected to the lid and canvas belt loop also containing a M15 grenade launcher sight in a green canvas pouch.

The scope is excellent, retains 95% original blue finish on the tube with some scattered areas of light freckling/surface corrosion, sharp markings and crisp clear optics. The scope case is very fine.
